YJAG concludes capacity building training for press club members

 



The Young Journalists Association of the Gambia(YJAG) on Sunday 20 October , 2024 concluded a two-day basic journalism training for press club members at St Michael's Junior and Senior Secondary school in Njongon village in the lower Niumi North Bank Region. 


The training that gathers over fifty (50) students, was considered the first and most successful training received by the students at St Michael's Junior and Senior Secondary school press. 


The first day of the training, students were taken through basic news writing, reporting, terminologies in journalism, among others.



They were given class exercise in order to guage their understanding on the topics presented to them.


At the climax of the training, YJAG executive members were invited at the Niumi FM to discuss about the importance of the training  and other activities of The Young Journalists Association of the Gambia. 


The final day of the training, students were presented with topics such as; interviews, news presentation, possible sources to be interviewed, differences between the three types of sources, what a good story should contain, the inverted pyramid style of reporting, ethical principles in journalism (Gambia Press Union GPU code of conduct) known as the Cherno Jallow charter of Ethics for journalists, and career guidance for the aspiring journalists. 


Jayeh Joof, the Secretary general of St Michael's Junior and Senior Secondary school    explains that the was training  successful and it will help them to have more ideas on how to gather news, interview sources, report and present news in a more professional manner.


he hopes  that the club will continue to be having similar trainings in the near future. 



Abdoulie Gaye, the coordinator of St Michael's Junior and Senior Secondary school press club commends YJAG executive for honouring their invitation and the knowledge they have impacted on his students. 



Gaye urges the students to utilize the training and knowledge gained. He emphasizes that students should  not keep the knowledge they have aquire during the training only  to themselves, rather, they should share it with rest of the press members who were not fortunate to attend the training in order to make it more useful. 



St Michael's Junior and Senior Secondary school press club  in Njongon village in the lower Niumi, is a newly established press club which was launched on July 24, 2024. This two-day training conducted by YJAG is said to be the first outside basic journalism training course they have received since its establishment. 



The currently executive of The Young Journalists Association of the Gambia has for the past years supporting press club members through trainings and career guidance, conducting trainings for press club teacher coordinators and organizing media tournament among media practitioners in the Gambia. 



The Young Journalists Association of the Gambia(YJAG ) was established in 2007 by a group of hard working determined young journalists in the Gambia with the sole purpose of promoting and protecting the welfare of all young journalists in the country  including  press clubs.



YJAG executive was ably represented by Omar Faye Public Relations Officer and Ousman G Darboe the Assistant Secretary General.
