Drivers snub of zebra crossing endanger pedestrians safety

Over the past years, the issue of drivers ignoring zebra crossings in The Gambia has become a major concern for road users.

This reporter was out and about to look into the safety of pedestrians around the metropolitan city.

Zebra crossings are intended to provide pedestrians with a safe way to cross busy roads, yet many drivers disregard these vital markings, putting pedestrians at risk and undermining the purpose of traffic regulations.

Numerous drivers continue to engage in reckless driving. The violation of zebra crossings by drivers has escalated at an alarming rate, prompting authorities to act swiftly to ensure pedestrians safety.

Lamin King Colley, the commissioner of the Mobile Traffic Unit of the Gambia Police Force (GPF), emphasizes the importance of zebra crossings.

“The line of a zebra crossing for pedestrians is like you are at your home comfort zone. If pedestrians step their foot on the line of the zebra crossing, it means that he/she is at his/her home.” he said.

He urged drivers to stop and wait for pedestrians to cross.

Alieu Sarr, a former driver with 19 years of experience, noted that many drivers lack discipline and are unfamiliar with traffic rules.

“The issue of drivers giving their apprentices the chance to drive without proper training is also a reason I believe contributes to the violation of zebra crossings, as most apprentices are not acquainted with the traffic rules and regulations.” he argued.

Aisha Ann, a pedestrian who uses zebra crossings daily, recounted her experience.

“I remember almost getting knocked down by a driver while on the zebra crossing because the driver was speeding and couldn’t brake. I had to step back to save my life”.
