The Coalition of Progressive Gambians (COPG) has expressed deep concern over the escalating security situation in the country, citing a recent surge in armed robberies, mysterious murders, rapes, and kidnappings.
The group claims these incidents are a cause for serious worry among citizens and highlights the lack of a clear roadmap for security sector reforms. “We urge government to urgent in the execution of security sector reforms which will not only reduce reduce crime but equip the security personnel with the necessary and relevant skills in the execution of their duties, roles and responsibilities.” the release said.
The COPG criticized the underperformance of security services, particularly the police and fire and rescue services, citing inadequate equipment and training as key contributing factor to the rise in crime and insecurity.
“The COPG is calling for adequate funds to be appropriated to the security services to equip them and improve their working conditions.” the release added. The group also called for crime prevention through community engagement and youth involvement, advocating for education and skills development programs that will equip citizens with tools to combat crime.
