The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) has over the weekend called for immediate closure of Daara Madina Suwanneh a quranic school in Brufut, amid the scabies outbreak.
“In light of this serious public health issue, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has taken immediate and decisive action”.
The Ministry issued the statement on x formerly Twitter.
“MoBSE has ordered the immediate closure of Daara Madina Suwanneh. All students diagnosed with scabies have been referred for Urgent medical treatment, while unaffected students have been safely transferred to an alternative Quranic school.” said the release.
According to the Ministry of Health, medical examinations of 101 minors at the school confirmed 57 cases of scabies.
The Ministry has launched a joint investigation with the Ministry of Health to ascertain the welfare of students at the Quranic school.
“This inquiry will not only determine the circumstances surrounding the scabies outbreak at Daara Medina Suwanneh but also assess the general living, health, and learning conditions of students” according to the release.
The release added: “To prevent furture occurrences and ensure well-being of all students, MoBSE engage with associations responsible for Madarasa and Majalis Education in The Gambia. This goal is to develop and implement Minimum Standards Regulations for Al Basic and Secondary Education service providers, ensuring full compliance to protect the health and safety of our children.”.
