The Edward Francis Small Center for Rights and Justice (EFSCRJ) has strongly criticized the Ministry of Justice for its passive failure to provide a comprehensive report on the sale of Jammeh assets.
“One month later, the Ministry has still not produced this report. Despite a public commitment on May 5 to release a detailed report, and a subsequent list of some assets provided on May 9, 2025 the Ministry has yet to deliver on its promise.” the release said.
Amid the growing pressure, led by Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), staged a peaceful protest on May 8 2025 demanding full disclosure.
Posted on the social media, the Center revealed that it submitted a formal information request to the Ministry of Justice on May 5, in accordance with the Access to Information (ATI) Act 2021.
However, 35 days later, the Ministry has neither responded to the request nor acknowledged its receipt, a clear violation of the Act which stipulates 21-days of response period.
“The Ministry of Justice has not only failed to respond to our request but also it did not even acknowledge receipt of our letter. This is a blatant disregard of the law whose creation was itself spearheaded by the Ministry in collaboration with the GPU and TANGO.”the release added.
The Center has urged all Gambians, including the National Assembly, civil society organizations, political parties, and development partners, to demand the Ministry of Justice uphold its legal obligations and demonstrate a commitment to transparency.
“We wish to therefore call on Gambians, more so the National Assembly, civil society, political parties, and our development partners to demand the Ministry of Justice to respect and abide by the law and demonstrate commitment to transparency.” the release concluded.
