Ousainou ANM Darboe, the leader of the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has addressed recent public disagreements within the party, urging members to prioritize unity as the nation approaches the 2026 presidential election.
In a statement, the leader acknowledged that the past few days “have not been our best” he said. in demonstrating party unity, lamenting “public recriminations among a handful of our supporters and members.” he noted that the involvement of leaders, “in varying degrees and manners,” had compounded the issue, leaving many loyal supporters “saddened, disappointed and in some instances upset.”.
Emphasizing the UDP’s three-decade history, the leader reminded members of their “enormous responsibility” in seeking to lead the country, a burden he said rests on “every member. Starting from me to the newest member.” he adviced. He stressed that unity is a “permanent trust that must be nurtured and protected.”. He added.
The veteran politician highlighted the party’s size, growth, and diversity as strengths, viewing it as “one family in a big tent.”. He affirmed that “disagreement is normal,” and “nurturing ambition… is healthy.” However, he warned that “disunity, whatever the underlying reasons… is a losing proposition and must therefore be avoided at all cost.” he warned.
Looking ahead to the 2026 presidential election, the UDP leader declared his intention to seek the party’s flag bearer position. If selected, he pledged to run a “robust, fact-based and issue-focused campaign” to convince Gambians that the UDP and its potential allies are the “only choice to replace the corrupt and insensitive NP government.”.
He concluded by urging party members “not to be distracted.”.
