Thousands of Gambians yesterday took to the street in a peaceful protest organized by Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), demanding transparency, accountability, and an end to corruption in the country.
Protesters carried various banners with messages such as “Gambia is not Moving. Barrow Must Go” “Who killed the corps,” and “The system is corrupt,” aiming to amplify their voices and seek solutions. Many expressed deep dissatisfaction with the government, others chanting “Barrow must go.”
The crowd vociferously asked, “I am ready, are you ready to fight corruption?”. This recent demonstration follows GALA’s initial protest on May 8, 2025. A central concern for many Gambians is the perceived undervalued and non-transparent sale of former President Yahya Jammeh’s assets.
There is a strong belief that these assets are being sold in a politically biased manner to individuals connected to the current administration, rather than being placed under public ownership for the benefit of all Gambians.
Concerns have also been raised about properties missing from the official asset register. GALA was formed by young, concerned Gambians in response to these issues, along with broader allegations of rampant corruption, financial mismanagement, and a lack of accountability within public institutions.
GALA submitted several petitions during the event, including a petition to the President of The Gambia Association of Local Government Authorities, demanding an investigation into corruption and the recovery of looted assets in local government councils.
Petition to the President of The Gambia, demanding action on the Joint Committee Report on Petroleum Sector Fraud and and Systematic Failures.
Petition against The Gambia Football Federation. Petition to His Excellency Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of The Gambia, demanding executive action on the findings and recommendations of the National Assembly Select Committee on Acute Kidney Injury in Children.Petition to demand special investigations into land allocations and corruption.
The youth led movement remain resolute in their commitment to end corruption and ensure transparency, accountability, and justice for all citizens.
