Essa Mbye Faal, former TRRC lead counsel and leader of APP Sobeya party has issued a public apology, amid widespread public backlash over demeaning remarks on the State Varsity unvalued certificate and low English proficiency of graduates.
In a video clip Essa Faal was heard saying, “we have a university; the certificate it issues has value only in the Gambia. If you go to England, the standard is so low. You produce a graduate who cannot speak or write good English, which is very sad.”
Responding to public criticism over his remarks, Essa Faal said his intention was not to demean the accomplishment of the State Varsity, adding that his remark was aimed at highlighting areas for improvement.
“My intention was never to demean or belittle the hard work and accomplishment of the University or the brilliant minds it has nurtured. Indeed it is essential to recognize and applaud the numerous graduates who have gone on to achieve greatness both locally and internationally. I aimed to highlight areas for improvement in our educational system, hoping to spark constructive discussion that could lead to positive change.” he said.
In his own word: “As I reflect on this situation, I want to reaffirm my deep respect for every Gambian and the unique contributions they have bring to our nation. I do not support elitism; rather I believe in fostering a society where merits prevails, regardless of one’s background. Each individual has the potential to make a difference, and it is our collective responsibility to create an environment that nurtures and supports that potential.
Education is a vital pillar of this endeavor, and I am committed to advocating for improvements that elevate our standards to benefit all Gambians.”.
