(Outpost) Reed Brody, International human rights lawyer said Gambiaʼs case against the Myanmar at the ICJ for the genocide against the Rohingya has set the template for South Africaʼs case against Israel for the Gaza genocide.
“Gambiaʼs initiative – using the universal obligations under the Genocide Convention – set the template for South Africaʼs case against Israel for the Gaza genocide.” he said.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC over the weekend, he said Gambiaʼs case against the Myanmar came at a time when the world’s most powerful states, including the U.S and Russia brazenly flout the international law.
“Gambia, a small west African state with no direct stake invoked that law to protect a persecuted people on the other side of the world.” he added.
The renowned International lawyer said Gambia has line up evidence, including ethnic slurs from top officials, coordinated attacks, mass displacement, sexual violence and the destruction of livelihoods.
“The only reasonable inference is intent to destroy the Rohingya as a group.”.
The ruling of this case will shape genocide law for the Gaza case.
