Suwaibou Touray, the newly elected Secretary General of the People’s Democratic Organization for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) outlined vision for better Gambia.
He made these remarks at the party congress over the weekend at Paradise hotel.
“Our country is suffering, and our people are going through tremendous difficulties and poverty is rampant. Farmers constitute 75 per cent of our population. Many struggles to make ends meat. The farmers are undergoing a very serious difficulties.
There children are going through the backway and are dying in the sea. These are issues that cannot be left hanging. We must put efforts, and effort must be done to ensure that this country is rescued. Efforts must be done to ensure our people have a better life.” he posited.
He said the current budget is consume by the the beareacratic system.
“Nothing is left for development. Now we go for loans and mortgage. We are mortgaging our assets, that is depriving our future generation of their foundation.”
Suwaibou Touray called for unity and understanding in the party. He said DOI is the only party of hope to salvage the country.
“We are calling for unity and understanding so that this party that is the only hope to be rescued. This party need all the power so that we can make a threshold to victory.”.
At the elective congress Suwaibou Touray secured 72 votes and Dr. Bai Biran Jagne who secured a second place pulled 54 votes. Edrissa Jallow, former administrative secretary pulled 50 votes.
Other elected executive members include Essa Wally, elected as new chairman of the party; Alpha Robinson as head of the Political Bureau; Dr Adama Bah Secretary to the Expert Bank and Joseph Elijah Treasurer.
Dr Bai Biran Jagne elected as the Secretary of the Sovereign Wealth Fund Board, Fatou Sallah Jobe as the new Secretary of the Women’s Bureau alongside Aminata Maimuna Baldeh as secretary to the Youth Bureau.
The new Secretary General and National Assembly member for Wuli East thanked party supporters and the outgoing Secretary General for their support and service to the party.
“I am thanking everybody for all the efforts to make progress in this congress. I will first start with the outgoing Secretary General for his work, resistance persistence and consistency that he has been pushing for a these years for us to have a foundation. I am also thanking the outgoing Chairperson of the central committee for fourty years of service. We should all emulate that. I thanked the diaspora.”.
