The Mpox situation continue to surged across the continent, with new outbreaks in Madagascar, Mali and Comoros bringing the number countries affected since 2024 to thirty three.
Professor Yap Boum, Deputy Incident Manager, Incident Management Support Team (IMST) in DRC revealed this on Thursday during Africa CDC weekly virtual press briefing.
“On 30 December 2025, Madagascar’s MoH declared an outbreak of mpox
New cases in epi week 5 of 2026.
New suspected cases: 111 vs 115 Epi Week 4 (3.5%).
New confirmed cases: 48 vs 88 Epi Week 4 (45%). Deaths on confirmed Cases: 0 vs 0 Epi Week 4.” he revealed.
Mpox outbreak in the Union of Comoros
On 23 January 2026, the government declared Mpox outbreak. As of 26 January, the number has increased to nine.
“New Suspected Cases: 4 vs 6 EW 5.
New Confirmed Cases: 3 vs 1 EW 5.
New Deaths: 0. Recovered Cases: 7” according to Yap Boum.
Ongoing Response Efforts
The government has established three isolation centres 1682 PCR test kits available. Ongoing preparation for vaccination, Surveillance at POE, with 3,236 passengers screened.
Asked about the contingency plan of Africa CDC, amid rising surge of Mpox. Dr. Mercy of Africa CDC said efforts are underway to support affected countries to improve surveillance, and to integrate response systems for continental security.
