Senegal: President Faye moves to consolidate grip on power as he rebrand his coalition

According to Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the victory in Senegal’s 2024 presidential election was not solely due to the political party PASTEF, but rather the result of a strong coalition.

During the Annual General Meeting of the coalition he leads on Saturday, Faye emphasized the crucial role the alliance played in his success.

Readers could recalled that PASTEF had been dissolved at the time of the election, making the coalition the primary political structure backing Faye’s campaign.

In his speech, Faye also asserted himself as the “guardian of values,” a comment that has sparked interest and discussions among Senegal’s political circles. Many view this statement as a subtle allusion to Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, who has previously referred to himself as the “guardian of the revolution.”.

These statements have arisen amidst reported tensions within the ruling coalition. Sonko, the leader of PASTEF, has expressed concerns that the party’s principles may not be upheld within the coalition and has warned of a potential reconsideration of their position.

There are now speculation about the dynamics between the country’s two senior leaders and the future of the governing coalition that secured Faye’s victory. It remains to be seen how this will unfold.
