The civil society organizations (CSOʼs) have demanded full accountability and prosecution of those culpable in the sale of Jammeh assets, amid the national assembly special select committee report.
During the two day review exercise held at Metzy hotel on Thursday, CSO’s brainstormed the findings of the National Assembly Select Committee report.
Redears could recalled that in 2017 the Janneh commission was set up to probe former President Jammeh financial dealings.
In 2019 the Barrow government accepted recommendations and appointed a private receiver Alpha Kapital Advisory to manage and sell assets.
The sale of Jammeh assets were sold below market value sparkling nationwide backlash and gave birth to Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), a pressure group demanding full transperancy and accountability.
On 14th May 2025 the National Assembly established Special Select Committee to investigate the sale and disposal process.
Madi Jobarteh, rights activist and founder of the Edward Francis Small Center for Rights and Justice said huge “anomaly happened during the setting up of the Janneh commission and the government did not fulfill its responsibility in terms of assets recovery and accountability”.
He called on the National Assembly to act on its powers and excuse delays for accountability.
Ade Daramy, former prosecutor cum media specialist CSO’s should provide supported evidence, couple with legal and advocacy campaigns and take legal action on those responsible for the sale of the Jammeh assets.
“CSOs must get their evidence, which is plentiful, showing the serious lapses that occured with the sale and disposal. They should choose the most serious of these and launch both an adocacy campaign and legal action against those responsible for the most serious violations. They shouldn’t try and go after everyone but concentrate on a few instances that, when they get to court, will throw a light on the other offenses” said Ade Daramy.
At the climax of the review exercise CSO’s device strategies demanding accountability and prosecution of those culpable in the sale of Jammeh assets.
