Senegal: Govʼt signs MOU with separatist group



The government of President Diomaye Faye on Sunday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Movement of Democratic Forces (MFDC) aimed at ending decades old conflict.

The peace deal was brokered by Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko was in Bissau this Sunday, where a memorandum of understanding was signed between the State of Senegal and the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance.

The agreement forms part of a growing efforts for a lasting peace in the south of the country.

“We had to close the work on the negotiations between the MFDC and the State of Senegal, a committee that had been working for 3 days here in Bissau. We were able to participate in the conclusion of this agreement which constitutes a very important step towards peace in Casamance,” announced this Sunday, Ousmane Sonko. The Head of Government was in Bissau where he transmitted a message from the Head of State to the President of Guinea Bissau.


The latter declared that discussions will continue between the two parties. But, they are on the right track, he reassures. “This agreement has just been signed, the dialogue continues and I think that we are on the right track in this dialogue. But regardless of that, the Prime Minister came as the bearer of a message from President Diomaye,” declared President Umaro Sissoko Embalò. The details of the said memorandum of understanding have not been revealed.
