Senegal to summon former President Sall to court

The National Assembly of Senegal has initiated a decisive procedure in favor of the transfer of detention between Senegal and Morocco, reports SourceA.

A bill, registered under number 03/2025, will be examined on Monday, March 3, 2025 by the Intercommittee, bringing together the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Laws Committee. This initiative aims to ratify a bilateral agreement signed in 2004 in Rabat.

This legal context comes after Minister Moustapha Sarré accused former President Macky Sall of being at the head of a “gang”, threatening him with imminent imprisonment. The official statement from the Assembly was widely distributed on social networks by government officials, signaling a political will to accelerate the process, the newspaper notes.

Since leaving Senegal, Macky Sall has settled in Morocco, a country with which Dakar is preparing to finalize a prisoner transfer agreement. If this text is ratified, it could allow the Senegalese authorities to request his extradition in the event of legal proceedings. Already weakened by accusations of corruption and abuse of power, the former president could be targeted by legal proceedings

Such a scenario would mark a historic turning point in Senegalese politics, where never has a former head of state been prosecuted so directly after leaving power.

On the one hand, supporters of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko see in this legislative advance a desire to render justice and fight against impunity, particularly in the face of accusations of embezzlement and mismanagement brought against the former regime.

On the other hand, Macky Sall’s supporters denounce a witch hunt motivated by political score-settling, believing that this initiative aims above all to permanently remove him from the Senegalese political landscape.
