Tensions erupted at Westfield on friday morning as Police Intervention Unit officers in riot gear dispersed members of the GALA Movement gathering for their one-year anniversary.
One PIU officer was photographed confronting a youth with a shield and baton as press and bystanders looked on.
Eight GALA central committee members were subsequently arrested and taken to Kairaba Police Station. Detainees include Hakeem Touray, Abdoulie Bah, Kexx Sanneh, Omar Camara, Omar Sanyang, Alieu Sarr. Ebrima Kaira and Kaddy Jadama.
Police had not announce any charges at a time of going to press.
