Barrow’s speech at a glance: Marching in Solidarity for Self-Reliance and National Development

The Gambia celebrated its 60th Independence Anniversary on Tuesday February 18, 2025, in Banjul.
The event saw the attendance of dignitaries from various African countries, government officials, school children and cultural groups.
In his speech at the 60th Independence Anniversary in Banjul, President Adama Barrow noted that despite global challenges, the Gambian economy has achieved a growth rate of 5.8% in 2022, with inflation reduced to 18% in 2023 and projected to decline to 10% in 2024.
He expressed optimism that economic performance will improve from 2025 onwards.

On Infrastructure Development
He stated that his government has over the past years, registered significant strides in health and education, including the construction of 424 new schools and the establishment of 6,400 classrooms, aimed at expanding access to education and creating opportunities for every Gambian child. He added that over 100 doctors are currently specializing in various disciplines at The Gambia Medical School (UTG) to enhance the health sector.
On Agricultural Development
President Barrow mentioned that since 2019, his government has uplifted the livelihoods of the agrarian communities through the Women Enterprise Fund, plus supporting thousands of entrepreneurs in establishing and expanding their businesses, along with additional skill training programs for youth.
On Irregular Migration
President Barrow emphasized his government’s commitment to helping youth succeed in The Gambia. He advised young people to value their lives and change the narratives for their families, stressing that success requires discipline, respect, hard work, and law-abiding. He urged them not to be swayed by the allure of other countries.
The Diamond jubilee was commemorated with series of events, including a grand parade featuring all sectors of security apparatus, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and security.
