Father of renowned musician dies aged 98

El Hadji Elimane Ndour, father of singer Youssou Ndour, took his last breath on Wednesday evening at the Principal Hospital in Dakar, at the age of 98. Worsened by age and weakened, he passed away surrounded by his loved ones, after more than a week of hospitalization.

According to the deceased’s relatives, El Hadji Elimane Ndour , although lucid, had become increasingly weakened in recent months. His admission to the Principal Hospital was dictated by a gradual deterioration in his health, a natural consequence of the weight of the years. Despite medical care and the unwavering support of his family, the father of the king of Mbalax passed away peacefully. Admitted to this medical establishment for more than a week, the father of the singer Youssou Ndour has finally taken his final bow.

“I will end my days here.” These words, spoken in 2018 by El Hadji Elimane Ndour, resonate today like a testament. He had always refused to leave the Medina, the neighborhood where he had built his life and to which he remained deeply attached. It was only when his condition worsened that he was taken to the Principal Hospital, where he lived his last moments.

Originally from Thiès, El Hadji Elimane Ndour had joined Dakar at the age of 17, driven by an iron will to succeed through work. In the Medina, he was a key figure, playing a key role as a neighborhood delegate and local mediator. A man of hard work and principles, he had never stopped working, even at an advanced age, refusing to live in idleness despite the fame and success of his son.
