Gilbriel Gando Baldeh Senior Health Communication Officer at the Department of Health Promotion and Education has called for concerted efforts to eliminate malaria in the country.
He made these remarks on Tuesday at a press briefing held at the National Malaria Control Office in Kanifing ahead of the National Malaria Day slated for 25th April 2025, with the Theme “malaria ends with us: reinvest, reimagine and reignite”.
The day is set aside to raise awareness on the dangers of malaria as a killer disease and to device strategies in eliminating the disease.
“We called for action to end malaria.
For decades malaria has been a persistent threat. But we’ve reduce the death rates, compared to before. Improve diagnostic, compared to before.
We reinvest in people, in prevention, in innovation and in strengthening heath systems that will protect every household, most especially the vulnerable.
We reimagine new strategies and more inclusive approaches to eliminate malaria.” he posited.
Speaking at the event Dr. Nathan Bakyaita Njubuga, WHO representative has acknowledged the significant strides registered by the ministry of health in the fight to eliminate malaria.
Malaria cases have significantly dropped from 2015 to 2024.
The National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) has achieved a significant reduction in the malaria burden over the last decade.
“Prevention of malaria parasite infection among general population has reduced from 4% in 2010 to 0.2% in 2014 and 0.1% in 2017”.
