The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources (MECCNAR), through Minister Rohey John Manjang, has announced a strict embargo on the felling of endangered forest trees.
Acting under the authority of the Forest Act of 2018, the Ministry has also prohibited the sale, purchase, and possession of forest produce obtained in violation of the Act.In a statement issued by the Ministry, the public was strongly cautioned against engaging in the illegal trade of forest products.
As part of its intensified efforts toward environmental conservation, MECCNAR has launched a nationwide crackdown on unlawful timber logging and other forest-related violations.
Authorities have impounded 12 trucks carrying illegally sourced forest products. The Ministry further revealed that these decisive legal actions are not confined to The Gambia alone.
In a bid to strengthen regional forest protection, MECCNAR is working in collaboration with counterparts in neighboring countries to enforce the Forest Act and curb cross-border forest exploitation.
