Sallahʼs diagnosis of constitutional impasse, myriad of lack of scrutiny

Sheriff Saidykhan

Halifa Sallah, the Secretary General of the People’s Democratic Organization for Independence (PDOIS) has said that the failed 2024 Draft Constitution lack proper scrutiny at the National Assembly.

He made these remarks yesterday at the party headquarters in Churchillʼs Town.

“The constitution says from the second reading if they allow it to pass, it will allow them to go to the committee stage, and in that committee stage that is where the scrutiny should have started. And then they will prepare the report and bring opinions on the content of the constitution.” he said.

The veteran politician added that this process would allow the lawmakers to go to the consideration stage, and thoroughly vote clause by clause.

“They will scrutinise and vote up to the end. If the three quarter accept, and it is taken to the IEC, to prepare for a referendum within six months.” he posited.

Constitution making he said, is the process of nation building.

“Because you’re building the mindset of the people on how they are suppose to be governed. Nothing is more important than the constitutional making process.”.
