The Coalition of Progressive Gambians (COPG) strongly condemned the heavy-handed response of security officers in arresting protesters who gathered to express their disappointment over the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority’s (PURA) recent intervention on data tariffs.
The right to peaceful assembly and protest the group said, is fundamental in any democracy.
“The actions of the security officers not only undermine this right but also stifle public discourse on critical issues affecting our citizens.” the group said.
The pressure group further urged the government to prioritize the welfare of citizens, and called for their immediate release.
“We demand the immediate release of those arrested and call for restraint in handling future protests.”.
