The Gambia Immigration Department (GID), in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MoTIE) recently commenced a six-day nationwide sensitisation campaign on the dangers of irregular migration.
The initiative is funded through the ECOWAS–Spain Fund for Migration and Development.
Centered on the theme: “Curb Irregular Migration and Promote Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in The Gambia through Sensitisation”, the campaign seeks to raise awareness on the impending dangers of irregular migration, improve community support, while also highlighting the role of the GID in addressing this menace.
The team engaged 25 participants, including immigration officers, police and youth representatives from Ndofan, Essau, Amdalai, and Upper and Lower Niumi at Fass Njagga Choi in North Bank Region, a region that has registered numerous irregular migration attempts in record.
In line with the agenda of the ECOWAS–Spain Fund for Migration and Development, which seeks to strengthen the work of ECOWAS in the field of migration and development, strengthening coordination structures, and preventing irregular migration, the campaign equally augments the GID’s community engagement drives and strategic vision to strengthen civil-security cooperation.
The GID remains committed to tackling irregular migration through effective communication strategies and shared community responsibility.
