FLAG empowers rural communities on legal aid

The Female Lawyers Association of The Gambia (FLAG) has launched a nationwide mobile legal aid clinic aimed at promoting access to justice and strengthening the rights of women and children across the country.

The initiative, which began over the weekend, will be a three-day sensitization campaign in Bwaim, Foni District, seeks to bridge the gap between communities and the legal system by taking legal education directly to the people.

Established in 2006, FLAG has been at the forefront of advocating for women’s and children’s rights through legal aid, awareness-raising, and policy engagement. This latest campaign continues that mission empowering communities with knowledge of the law and their fundamental rights.

Participants in Bwaim will be educated on critical issues including family law, gender-based violence, child custody and maintenance, as well as marriage and divorce rights. Community members will have the opportunity to consult legal practitioners on personal cases.

The campaign forms part of FLAG’s ongoing commitment to improving access to justice for all Gambians, particularly marginalized groups. It underscores the organization’s belief that legal empowerment is a vital tool in achieving equality and social development.

As the mobile clinics continue nationwide, FLAG hopes to reach more communities ensuring that women and children everywhere understand that justice is not a privilege, but a right.
