President Barrow addresses nation on Jinack migrant boat disaster

(Outpost) President Adama Barrow has expressed deep sorrow over a tragic maritime accident involving a boat carrying migrants off Jinack Village around midnight on December 31, 2025.

In an address to the nation tonight, the President said 102 people were rescued from the scene, with several currently receiving medical treatment, while seven bodies have been recovered.

He added that search and rescue operations are ongoing and that the National Emergency Response Plan has been activated to support survivors.

President Barrow extended his condolences to the families of the victims and commended the Navy, emergency responders, health workers, and community volunteers for their swift and coordinated response.

Warning against the dangers of irregular migration, he described the incident as “a painful reminder of the dangerous and life-threatening nature of irregular migration,” stressing that no dream or journey is worth the loss of a single life at sea.

He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to preventing irregular migration and to creating safer, more dignified opportunities for young people through development initiatives, job creation, and sustainable livelihoods at home.

The President also announced a full investigation into the incident, assuring that anyone found responsible would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

He urged the public to remain calm and compassionate as rescue efforts continue and pledged to provide further updates as verified information becomes available.
