Gambia s oldest female Alkalo dies in Jufureh

Aja Tako Taal, the respected Alkalo of Jufureh, and known as the oldest serving female traditional leader in Gambia, has passed away this morning at her home in the beloved village.



The exact age of Aja Tako Taal is uncertain, but it is believed she was between 105 and 110 years old. According to those who knew her well, she was likely born around 1924-1926, making her around 100-102 years old at the time of her passing. She often shared that she was older than most of her peers, even those who were born during the time of Sir Dawda Jawara era, the first president of The Gambia (born 1924).



Aja Tako Taal was a pioneering figure, breaking barriers as one of the first women to hold the Alkalo position in the post-independence era of Gambia. She led Jufureh, a village renowned for its Roots history, with grace and wisdom for many years. Her leadership skillfully balanced traditional values with modernity, warmly welcoming visitors while preserving the rich cultural heritage of her community.




The passing of Aja Tako Taal is a great loss to both her village and country, as her life spanned over 100 years of Gambian history. The community is grieving the loss of this remarkable matriarch. Funeral arrangements are currently being made in Jufureh.
