The Government of The Gambia has appointed Martin Hackett as the country’s Special Prosecutor, marking a key step in efforts to deliver justice for crimes committed during the era of former president Yahya Jammeh.
Hackett, a British barrister, will lead investigations and prosecutions linked to findings of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission. His appointment follows an international selection process and is expected to strengthen accountability efforts under the country’s transitional justice programme.
According to authorities, the Special Prosecutor will work closely with the Ministry of Justice to review evidence gathered by the TRRC, build cases, and coordinate legal action against individuals found responsible for serious human rights violations.
The move is widely seen as a major milestone in The Gambia’s post-dictatorship reforms, as the government seeks to ensure accountability, promote rule of law, and bring closure to victims and families affected during Jammeh’s 22-year rule.
