The female hippopotamus responsible for the fatal attack on a herdsman has been shot dead by a hunter sanctioned by the Department of Parks and Wildlife Management.

The animal was killed along the banks of the River Gambia, less than 72 hours after the incident that claimed the life of Dawda Jallow, a pastoralist from Falladou.

According to reports, the incident occurred near Jafaye, where the victim had gone in search of missing livestock. He reportedly encountered the hippo, which was with her newborn calf on land.

Eyewitnesses described the attack as extremely violent, resulting in fatal injuries.

The action to eliminate the animal was taken in response to the danger posed to nearby communities.
